ACCELERATING DATA & AI INNOVATION

We are seeing huge advances in Data Science and ML every year. Most recently, we have seen progress not just in academia and industry, but also politicians are starting to take action in Europe and throughout the world. It is hard to quantify progress in AI in an exact way, but there is broad consensus that the USA is leading on AI with China not far behind as it continues to make substantial investments and has the goal of becoming the leading country on AI by 2030. For some metrics, such as number of scientific publications in deep learning, China is actually already ahead of the USA.

We have also seen initiatives in Europe, such as the recently published European Commission’s AI strategy, and other initiatives from France, Germany, UK, Finland, and Sweden. I was personally part of reviewing a recent report from Vinnova that gives a good overview of the current state and potential of AI.

Novel scientific results are being seen on a daily basis, and I’ve been particularly impressed with models such as the “Transformer” that claims that “Attention is All You Need” and can be used without need for recurrent or convolution layers. Techniques such as Progressive Growing of Generative Adversarial Networks are able to generate stunning high resolution imaginary celebrity photos. New impressive AI applications are also being deployed, such as Google Duplex that makes phone calls for you. It makes a convincing case for passing the Turing Test, at least for the domain of scheduling meetings.

As AI starts to become a ubiquitous part of any service, the risk of abuse and unwanted effects will also increase. We have seen data being misused in recent examples such as the Cambridge Analytica’s use of Facebook data, and this motivates improvements in regulations. But it is also important that any future rules or regulation does not hinder innovation.

For example it will be interesting to see what will happen with the new GDPR legislation. Hopefully, it will not lead to companies being afraid of using data but instead make sure that data processes are safe and privacy is preserved and respected. That is what this year’s event is all about: how can we accelerate data and AI innovation while navigating through technological advancements, organisational structures and regulations?

Based on the last years’ delegates’ recommendation, combined with our recent research, we have created an agenda that will fit the need of every organisation and practitioner. Across four stages we will focus on applied data science case studies, technical presentations on infrastructure for data and AI, as well as a full stage dedicated to management, organisational strategy and ethics.

Furthermore we have moved the event to a much bigger venue, refreshed the agenda with new learning models like the Campfire sessions, and dedicated time for more hands-on workshops, demos, panels and networking activities.

With this, I am glad to welcome you to the third edition of the annual Nordic Data Science and Machine Learning Summit. Don’t forget to bring your team. We have a lot to discuss.

Europe Data and Analytics Salary Guide 2017
The European salary guide from Harnham examines the hiring and remuneration trends for the data and analytics market across the region. From Germany to Gibraltar, we have your questions covered no matter where you are hiring or seeking a new role.

Confidently Anticipate and Drive Better Business Outcomes
The instrumentation of nearly everything is creating a rising tide of data, both structured and unstructured. Every enterprise realizes data is a priceless strategic asset and a resource for competitive advantage. But data by itself is of little use.

Big Data, Big Challenges, and Big Opportunities
Traditional business intelligence (BI) tools provide limited explanations of why something happened, because most BI solutions are geared more for reporting and dashboarding workflows that focus on the past. As a result, users are left to create their own insights from slicing, dicing, and drilling through the data themselves

    Machine Learning Automation: Beyond Algorithms
What happens if automated techniques that pro - vide results as good as models handcrafted by data scientists come to the market. As we've seen with the industrial revolution and the advent of the assembly line, when disruptive technologies enter the market, productivity rises dramatically and pent-up demand drives rapid expansion. We are seeing this with our customers, who are using automation techniques to answer many more business questions than before with the same amount of staff and skills.
